Ásbyrgi is a horseshoe-shaped canyon about 3.5 km long and roughly 1 km wide, with cliff walls up to 100 meters high enclosing a birch-and-willow forest and the pond Botnstjörn. It lies within the Jökulsárgljúfur section of Vatnajökull National Park, about 38 km east of Húsavík.

Why it matters
Geologists attribute the canyon to catastrophic glacial outburst floods from beneath Vatnajökull, one roughly 8,000-10,000 years ago and another about 3,000 years ago, after which the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river shifted its course eastward. Icelandic folklore instead credits the canyon's shape to a hoofprint left by Sleipnir, Odin's eight-legged horse.
