Eldheimar
Eldheimar is a volcano museum on Heimaey in the Vestmannaeyjar, built around a house that was excavated from the ash of the 1973 Eldfell eruption. Interactive exhibits tell the story of the eruption, the evacuation, and the town's recovery, with the buried home preserved in place at the centre of the building.

Why it matters
The excavated house makes Eldheimar a kind of Pompeii of the North, showing exactly how the tephra engulfed the neighbourhood in 1973. The museum also covers the 1963-67 birth of the nearby island of Surtsey, a UNESCO World Heritage site formed by an undersea eruption.
