Esjan
Esjan is the 914-metre volcanic ridge that rises directly north of Reykjavík across Kollafjörður, visible from almost anywhere in the capital and one of Iceland's most popular day hikes. The standard route climbs from the Esjustofa car park at Mógilsá up a marked, boot-graded trail to Steinn, a boulder about 3 kilometres up where most casual hikers turn back after roughly 600 metres of ascent; stronger hikers can continue to the Þverfellshorn summit and beyond toward the ridge's true high point, Hábunga. For a different kind of ascent, the Fálkaklettur Via Ferrata climbs a nearby cliff face on fixed cables to a suspended bridge, with a guide providing harness, helmet, and lanyard protection on the exposed rock sections.

Why it matters
Esjan is a Pleistocene-age volcanic formation built from basalt and tuff, with its western half dated to roughly 3.2 million years and its eastern half to about 1.8 million years, making it one of the oldest visible rock formations in the capital area. The Fálkaklettur route, opened in 2024 by the Icelandic mountaineer Haraldur Örn Ólafsson's company Fjallafélagið, was Iceland's first permanent via ferrata.
