Friðheimar

Friðheimar is a family-run horticultural farm in Reykholt that grows tomatoes year-round in geothermally heated greenhouses under supplemental lighting, and welcomes visitors into the greenhouse restaurant to eat tomato soup and other tomato dishes among the plants. The farm also breeds Icelandic horses and stages a horse show in multiple languages.

Why it matters
Run by agronomist Knútur Rafn Ármann and horticulturalist Helena Hermundardóttir, Friðheimar has become a well-known example of Iceland's geothermal greenhouse agriculture, irrigating its tomatoes with spring water from Fljótsbotnar, the source of the river Tungufljót.
