Jökulsárlón og Demantsströndin
Jökulsárlón is a large glacial lagoon in Vatnajökull National Park fed by the retreating Breiðamerkurjökull outlet glacier, which calves icebergs up to 30 meters high into the water before they drift toward the sea. Across the road, stranded chunks of ice wash up and glint on the adjoining black sand shore known as Diamond Beach.

Why it matters
The lagoon began forming in the 1930s as Breiðamerkurjökull retreated from its 19th-century maximum extent, and has grown roughly fourfold since the 1970s, from about 8 square kilometers to around 25 square kilometers today, reaching a maximum depth of 284 meters, Iceland's deepest lake. Its dramatic ice-filled scenery has appeared in several Hollywood productions, including two James Bond films and Batman Begins, and serves as one of the most visible markers of accelerating glacial retreat in Iceland.
