Vestmannaeyjar Swimming Pool

Vestmannaeyjar Swimming Pool is the indoor and outdoor pool complex on Heimaey, the only inhabited island of the Westman Islands archipelago off Iceland's south coast, reached by ferry from Landeyjahöfn or a short flight. Why it matters
The island town was partly buried and evacuated during the January 1973 eruption of Eldfell, which destroyed about a fifth of the settlement before a seawater-cooling operation stopped the lava from closing the harbour. Afterward, islanders drew heat from the still-cooling lava field to supply hot water and electricity for several years, an unusual chapter before the town returned to Iceland's conventional geothermal supply; the swimming pool is part of the fully rebuilt public infrastructure that followed.
